Evolution (Part 2 - Honk Scratch)

Part 1 tells the story of Commodore 64 music composed to sound like Queen songs.

Here in Part 2, there are two sides to the story -- composed MODs, and remix MODs.

Wiki MODs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module_file) if you like. I'm calling "composed" MODs the songs that don't actually contain any Queen music, but instead have other sampled instruments playing at different frequencies and lengths. "Remix" MODs are the ones that use bits of Queen music as those "instruments." I think I've gone quote happy!

Tracks 1-4 are "composed", 5-9 are "remixed."

CONTENTS:
1. Another One Bites the Dust	3:48	UNKNOWN (Comment/contact me if you know!!)
2. I Want to Break Free	3:26	David Durisotto
3. Love of My Life	2:56	Stapa
4. Bohemian Rhapsody	5:45	JPV
5. TechnoQueen	3:35	PiratePete
6. We Will Rock You	1:15	EternalHaze
7. Get Down Make Love (NIN)	4:14	Bedlam
8. The Invisible Man	3:24	Ginseng Alchemy
9. You Don't Fool Me	8:07	Roz Rotsten

If you know of other Queen-related SIDs/MODs/whatever (exept MIDI--yuck!), please comment and throw me a link! I'll do some searching too, and there might be enough for a Part 3!

Evolution (Part 1 - Bleep Bloop)

Far back in the mists of time, when computers couldn't yet "sample" a song without bursting into flame, there was the SID chip for Commodore 64. Feel free to Wiki SID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS_Technology_SID), but the folksy place to learn about it is at the High Voltage SID Collection (http://www.hvsc.c64.org/FAQ/index.html).

Here are a collection of Queen tunes, composed (rather than sampled/remixed) by some amateurs as well as some professionals. I'll post more details for each song later, but for now let me say this: NO, FLASH GORDON WAS NOT COMPOSED BY MR. SCIENTOLOGY, it is a completely different "Mr. Hubbard" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Hubbard).

CONTENTS:
1. Seven Seas of Rhye	1:59	Barry Leitch (The Jackal)
2. Lily of the Valley	1:10	Steve Emsle
3. We Will Rock You	1:03	Ben Daglish
4. Flash Gordon (Suite)	10:09	Rob Hubbard
5. Another One Bites the Dust	0:42	Murat Oktay (Axl)
6. Another One Bites the Dust	1:43	Ben Daglish
7. Crazy Little Thing Called Love	1:05	Kris Hatlelid
8. Save Me	3:13	Barry Leitch (The Jackal)
9. I Want to Break Free	2:50	Roman Chlebec (CreaMD)
10. A Kind of Magic	3:11	Martin Galway

Happy 60th Freddie! (Part Two)

I forgot to update the comments for this last year. It then became a habit, and then my New Year's Resolution, and then I just got bored with putting it off.

CONENTS:
1. Let's Turn It On (Demo Mix)	1:44
Original by Freddie from Bad Guy.
Remix by Dan Corson.
I believe Mr. Corson actually composed some music, and mixed the "vocal mix" off the 2000 Box Set on top. Hooray for talent! Hopefully he'll finish this sometime!

2. You Take my Life (Demo Mix)	0:29
Original sources are all Queen samples from various channels. Guess them all and win a prize!
Remix by Niek Lucassen.
This actually fooled me (and ruled me) the first time I heard it -- I thought it was a "lost demo"!!

3. State of Shock (King vs Queen Mix)	4:43
Original by the King of Pop -- Royal Crown Cola. It's got less sodium!
Remix by Tim Goosen.
Again, Freddie's amazing impressions of pop icons (including himself) show how versatile of a vocalist he was. "Hee Heee Hee" indeed!

4. Bulsara	5:53
Original by, well, Mr. Wenzel, actually. Despite what you (and I initially) might think, there's very little Freddie in here at all.
(Re?)mix by Juergen Wenzel.
This was Juergen's tribute to Farookh.

5. Play the Game (Orchestral Mix) 3:48
Original by Queen from "The Game", and an orchestral version from the album "The Queen Collection (played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)". It don't sound like tha bloke Phillip been tootlin wae at all -- proper violins n cellas n such, innit?
Remix by Lord Fickle.
This is beatiful and epic, and must have been a pain to synch up.

6. A Beautiful Day In Heaven (Revisited) 4:53
Original by Queen and Freddie from, well, quite a few sources really. Again, guess them all and win a prize!
Remix by Louise Bell.
This is good and mellow, and is great 'creme filling' in a Fickle Oreo.

7. I Was Born to Love You (Fickle Mix) 7:14
Original by Freddie on Bad Guy, but then Queen reassembled it for their Made In Heaven, and Fickle's gone and messed with it again!
Remix by Lord Fickle.
You may ask yourself, "Lady Peinforte" (for that IS your pet name for yourself, try to deny it), "where did this Fickle get an instrumental Queen version of this song?" The answer may surprise you. What're you looking at, I'm not going to open up Google for you.

8. The Freddie Mercury Spirit	11:56
This is another "mystery" track, where I will ask you to guess its contents. You may call me lazy, if you like, I can take it (sobs)!
Remix by Sébastien Bédé.
Actually I'll give you a hint. Add up the digits in the running time of this track, and you'll get the "unofficial" name of one of the tracks featured in this mix!

9. We Are The Champions (Orchestral Mix)	3:16
Original by Queen from "News of the World", and again Phil's Harmonica providing the orchestra.
Remix by Lord Fickle.
I think this one may have been harder to put together than "Game," so Fickle's outdone himself! Hey, the last 5 tracks have formed a Double-Decker-Fickle-Pickle-Oreo Sandwich!

Happy 60th Freddie! (Part One)

Comments have finally followed. They're only 4 months late, geesh.

CONTENTS
1. Let's Turn It On with Sideburns (Mutton Chop Mix)	2:48
Original "Let's Turn It On" by Freddie Mercury from his album "Mr. Bad Guy."
Original "Sideburns" by Brian May from "Guitarist Magazine 216 Bonus CD." What a strange name... no, not "Sideburns", that makes perfect sense.
Remix by John Schell.
This is probably version 3 or 4 of this mix, as the two song's keys don't perfectly align, and some critics on QueenZone kept pestering him to "fix" it. It weren't broke.

2. Mr. Bad Guy (Catastrophe Mix)	4:14
Original "Mr. Bad Guy" by Freddie Mercury, from the album of the same name. Notice how it took more letters to type that than re-writing the actual album title? Notice how many more letters I'm typing in noticing that? In actuality, most of this mix is from the "Freddie Mercury Box Set 2000" anyway, so I wasted tons of letters on all that nonsense.
Remix by The Furriest Backhouse Of All.
This steals lyrics from the demo versions of the song on the Box Set, and cigarettes from your dad's pocket when he's not looking.

3. There Must Be More To Life Than This (Noop Mix)	3:01
Original TMBMTLTT (not to be confused with TMNT) by Freddie Mercury, from "Mr. Bad Guy."
Remix by Sir Didymus.
If you think Freddie is doing an incredible impersonation alongside himself, then you are of course correct. There is no possible way I would be able to include that Artist's actual content without being molested in some fashion.

4. Living On My Own (vocal McMix radio edit 2006)	3:03
Original LOMO (that's French for snappy dresser) by Freddie Mercury, again, from "Mr. Bad Guy."
Remix by Bendy-Pitch Wilki.
Think how many artists have had their voices "fixed" by ProTools before commercial release. Now keep adding the digits in that number together until you get to a single two-digit number. Was your number 11? Thank goodness, thought I might have been psychic briefly. Phew.

5. Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow (Hybrid Mix)	4:31
Original LMLTNT (confuse that with LOLSOS, I dare you) by Freddie Mercury, from "Mr. Bad Guy." Wow. It's like he wrote a bunch of songs on this album or something.
Remix by PieterMC.
I had a remix in the works that was going to patch together the various versions found on the 2000 box set, but this one beat me to it. Maybe someday, when all the press has died down about this remix.

6. The Great Pretender (Chorale Mix)	3:47
Original "The Great Pretender" by the Platters. What? Ok, well Freddie covered it on either "The Freddie Mercury Album" (UK) or "The Great Pretender" (US) or "Granda Sajnigi" (Esperanto.)
Remix by Peter Cargill.
The chorale at the beginning is from a Platters Orchestral Tribute.

7. In My Defence (Instrumental Fickle Mix)	4:41
Original "In My Defence" (UK) or "In My Defense" (US) from "The Crappy Collection of Remixes of Freddie Singles" -- but really it started in a musical by Dave Clark called "Time."
Remix by Lord Fickle.
Mister Particular has many mysterious ways of assembling his mixes, most of which involves witches and demons -- beware!

8. Barcelona (Olympic Trial Mix)	4:36
Original "Barthelonaaaaaa" by Freddie Mercury and "Screamin' Monster Cabal" off deir joint by da same name.
Remix by Thomas Quinn.
Known for its brave genre-busting, the album "Barcelona" is regularly sampled by Christian-Rap-Country crooners all over the Bible belt.

9. La Japonaise (Nearly Monster-free Mix)	4:47
Original LJ by FM and MC from B.
Remix by Backhouse.
Think of it as karaoke -- and then please, dear god, DON'T SING!

10. The Golden Boy (Who Needs a Chorus Mix)	5:18
Original "The Golden Boy" by Eddie Murphy and -- what? Oh. THAT "Golden Boy."
Remix by "Preach It" Backhouse.
You can actually build a sonic/psychic weapon by looping Freddie's "simplYYYYYYYY", and use it to erase all knowledge of those Simply Red CDs you purchased. "What CDs?" you may ask. Exactly.

<itunes:summary>Comments have finally followed.

Proof positive that Queen Productions aren't the only ones that can re-release already-available material.

CONTENTS
1. Don't Stop Me Now (Dance Till You Drop Mix) 1:38
Original by Queen from their album "Jazz," which contains no real Jazz music, but indeed does contain plenty of "Jazz Hands."
Remix by Ragin' Ron Buczko.
Believe it or not this is so short because it was submitted as a possible backing track for a cheerleading competition.

2. Heaven For Everyone (Moonshine Mix) 6:37
Written by Roger Taylor (the drummer from Queen.) Recorded by The Cross (the solo band Roger Taylor (the drummer from Queen) put together when Queen stopped touring live) for their album "Shove It." Freddie Mercury (the maracas player and sometime vocalist for Queen) was invited to do some background vocals, and then took lead vocals on an alternate version. Those vocals were lifted posthumously and re-backed by Queen (the lead guitarist, bass guitarist, and drummer from Queen) for their netherworldly album "Made In Heaven."
All these versions and more go into Ross Robertson's remix.
After reading that provenance you might want to get some moonshine yourself.

3. Live At Wembley '86 (F*cking Water Mix) 2:20
Original by Queen, from the album "Live At Wembley '86" (the re-release of which a year or two ago is actually a really good buy.)
Remix by Mbublitz.
There's a word for the style of remixing used here, I think it's called ... "good."

4. Furia (Points Culminants Mix) 6:59
Original from the soundtrack of the movie "Furia," by Brian May (not the movie-soundtrack-writer Brian May, mind you, duh, it's the Brian May who wrote songs for movie soundtracks like "Highlander," "Flash Gordon," and, well, "Furia.")
Remix by Vladimir Vojtek.
My boss thinks parts of Furia sound like the Godfather. He also thinks it's ok to divide by zero. Did I mention he's a computer programmer?

5. Ride the Wild Wind (Blindspot Mix) 4:33
Original by Queen from their album "Innuendo." Here's an innuendo for you: the writing credit for this percussion and rhythm-heavy song simply reads "Queen."
Remix by Sir Reginald Backhouse.
Do not listen to this song while driving unless you have a vested interest in police pensions.

6. Heartland (Extended Acreage Mix) 6:59
Original by The Cross (see above) for their album "Blue Rock" -- well, no, that album had a single "Life Changes" -- but that was withdrawn...alright, alright! I stole it from Roger Taylor's trash can, ok?
Remix by Bart Lammey.
Who is the hack that remixed this?? It sounds like that extended version of "Keep Passing the Open Windows," just a bunch of goofy samples repitched like a cheap Casio in a Musicland, sheesh!

7. Don't Lose Your Head (Barnyard Mix) 0:34
Original by THE KURGAN! "HELLO LADIES, LELEL LELEL!" "IT'S BETTER TO BURN OUT, THAN FADE AWAY! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!"
Remix by Rappin' Ryan Waggoner.
Criticize this at your own peril, Highlander.

CONTENTS
1. Dancer (Kim Basinger mix)
Original by Queen from their amazing breakthru US chart-busting album "Hot Space."
Remix by Bart Lammey.
Do not force your cat to listen to this song repeatedly.

2. Put Out the Fire (Flame mix)
Original by Queen, again from that 8th wonder of the world, "Hot Space."
Remix by Ron Buczko.
There's a very subtle political message at work here, be sure to run the song backwards to discover it.

3. Living On My Own ('98 mix)
Original by Freddie Mercury, from his Antarctic pop sensation debut album "Mr. Bad Guy."
Remix by David "Sully" Sullivan.
Mr. Mercury would be 60 in 2006, and there's some sort of rehash being released in September to celebrate. Once you've bought that, pop back over here to listen to our FM-centric podcast.

August's 'cast is being prepared...no specific theme, just another set of good fan-made Queen-related remixes!
